The mission of the Outreach Commission is to use the time, talent, money, and prayer of the church to care for our neighbors and all of God’s good creation — locally, nationally, and globally — and to foster a growing spirit of stewardship in First Pres members, of all ages.
Our outreach efforts provide many opportunities for members to use their time, talents, and prayers to further the work of God in our local community, our country, and our world — to grow spiritually by being the hands and feet of Jesus at work in the world.
First Pres is especially proud to have youth who are actively involved locally, regionally, and internationally, in service to others. Our youth raise much of their own funds for service trips outside of our local community.
The members of the Commission look to the example of Jesus Christ and the guiding of the Holy Spirit as they seek to discern the will of God in the outreach ministry of the church.
The Outreach Commission’s monthly meetings are posted in the worship bulletins (and our online church calendar). They are open to everyone with a heart for service and outreach.
First Pres is active in international mission through our support of missionaries in Haiti and Thailand. We support the Iraqi Presbyterian Church as well as a Malawi AIDS orphanage. Our church was the originating foundation for Haiti Fund, Inc. and our membership continues to support Haiti and our mission there with funds, prayers, and team visits. A member of our church (and board member for Haiti Fund), traveled to Haiti shortly after the January, 2010, earthquake to assess damage and lend support. The congregation launched a special fund-raising campaign to help our Haitian friends and co-workers deal with the damage.
Our Church is also actively involved in the support of 10 families of Montagnards — indigenous people of the Central Highlands of Vietnam — who have been able to come to the United States and settle in New Bern. They’ve become members of our church family here. We have been blessed many times over by their participation in our church life.
First Pres supports Religious Community Services of New Bern by participating in its food bank, clothing bank, and kitchen. We support Merci Clinic which serves the needy within our community with basic medical and prescription needs, and also Phoenix House, which offers housing and education for those trying to conquer their addictions.
The church partners in numerous other outreach activities, including the Campus Christian Fellowship at Eastern Carolina University, Knitting for Others, CROP Hunger Walk, Relay for Life, and Habitat for Humanity. First Pres also supports several scholarships.
There are virtually unlimited opportunities at First Pres to get involved in outreach. For example:
Refugee Support — Besides monetary assistance for clothing and other necessities, the Montagnard families at First Pres need tutoring for both parents and children, especially in learning English. To find out more, call Harry or Sandy Vreeland (635-5231).
